Presidential Medal of Freedom President Dwight David Eisenhower Tribute - President Dwight D. Eisenhower helps unfurl the new 50-star U.S. flag in Washington on Aug. 21, 1959, after he signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state of the union. Others are Daniel Inouye, right, Democratic congressman-elect from Hawaii; Edward Johnston, center, secretary of Hawaii; and Col. James S. Cook Jr. of the officer of the Quartermaster General, holding the flag behind Eisenhower. Inouye would go on to become one of the nation's longest-serving senators ever, getting elected in 1962 and retaining the post for the rest of the century.
