U. S. Medal of Freedom Recipient Father Horacio de la Costa
(1916-1977)
Reverend Father Horacio Luis de la Costa, S.J. was born in Mauban, Quezon on May 9, 1916 to Judge Sixto de la Costa and Emiliana Villamayor and was a Provinical General of the Society of Jesus assigned to the Philippines. He entered the Society of Jesus on June 20, 1935. He was ordained on March 24, 1924 at Woodstock, Maryland , USA. He obtained his doctorate in history at Harvard University in 1951. In World War II he was imprisoned for two months at Fort Santiago by the Japanese for assisting the resistance. He assisted Fr. John F. Hurley , the Jesuit superior in bringing clothes and medicines to American and Filipino guerillas. For this he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the US government in 1946.
He was the Jesuit Provincial Superior to the Philippine Province from 1965 to 1970. In 1971 to 1975 he was assistant to the Father General in Rome. He was an accomplished historian and taught at Ateneo de Manila (Dean, College of Arts & Sciences), Sacred Heart College, Manila, and University of London. He is an authority in Philippine History and authored books which have become standard references.
He died on March 20, 1977.
Father Horacio de la Costa, S.J., in his book "The Jesuits in the Philippines 1581-1768 "states that Archbishop Miguel Garcia Serrano of Manila entrusted the island of Marinduque to the care of the Society of Jesus in 1612. The Jesuits stayed and founded the town of Boac on December 8, 1622, and later those of Sta. Cruz and Gasan.
